Recently, the German luxury car manufacturer BMW has taken a major decision to recall more than 5 lakh cars worldwide. This recall is due to a technical fault found in the engine starter. This malfunction can pose a vehicle fire hazard, raising serious concerns for the safety of drivers and passengers.

Risk of short circuit in the engine starter

According to a BMW spokesperson, the electromagnets in the engine starter have been found to experience excessive friction over time. This wear increases the chances of short circuit. In such a case the starter part may overheat. The possibility of a fire in a running vehicle in a critical condition cannot be ruled out. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, the company has announced a recall of a large number of vehicles.

Which models are affected?

The problem has been found in 16 different models manufactured between July 2020 and July 2022. Around 5.75 lakh cars are expected to be affected. This includes the BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series. Popular SUV and sports models like X4, X5, X6 and Z4 are also on the list.

What is the company’s advice to motorists?

BMW advises all customers not to leave the vehicle unattended after starting the engine, especially when using the remote start feature. The company will soon inform the affected customers through an official letter. Defective engine starters will be replaced free of charge at no additional cost to the customer.

This is not the first time that BMW has had to recall such a large number of vehicles. Earlier in 2024, the company had recalled around 1.5 lakh cars due to a malfunction in the brake system. However, it has been claimed that the recall this time will not have a major impact on the financial condition of the company.
