Toaster Story

A miserly man (Rajkummar Rao) tries to retrieve a toaster he gifted after a couple calls off their wedding, but is inadvertently drawn into murder.

Toaster Movie Review

The movie marks the first home production of Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa and is the directorial debut of Vivek Daschaudary, who was earlier AD on Guns & Gulaabs and ...Yahaan.

The concept of the movie about a miser who goes to extreme lengths to get back the toaster he had reluctantly gifted for a wedding after it gets called off is quite intriguing and gets you on board immediately.

The humour in the first hour hits home and most of the jokes land big time thanks to Rajkummar Rao’s outstanding comic timing.

However, when the actual plot kicks in, the writing suffers dearly and especially the humour takes a back seat.

Most of the jokes from there on till the finale fail to land and that’s the biggest problem of Toaster. The black comedy largely remains a missed opportunity with the actual “comedy” going for a hike.

I specifically despised the entire track of Rajkummar Rao and Archana Puran Singh. I initially assumed it to be a subplot but unfortunately, it turned out to be the main plot of the movie and honestly those were the weakest moments of the narrative.

Whenever the focus was on Rajkummar Rao being a miser, I had a ball. But the murder plot was a big downer.

The music is forgettable and editing is fine and so is the pacing. The cinematography is passable.

Toaster Star Cast

The movie stands on Rajkummar Rao’s able shoulders, and it is his performance that makes it somewhat watchable. If not for his terrific performance, the movie would have fallen flat.

Sanya Malhotra is funny and quite likeable. Her character gets some fun moments and she nails them. Her performance is quite reminiscent of young Juhi Chawla.

Archana Puran Singh does well and imbibes the body language of an elderly lady, and even her voice modulation is quite good. The problem is the writing of her character, which is quite confusing.

Upendra Limaye is first rate but gets less than desired screentime. Abhishek Banerjee is passable in a limited screentime, and Seema Pahwa provides able support but gets less scope.

Farah Khan is a riot in a cameo. She is there for three scenes and is hilarious. Jitendra Joshi is wasted.

There is a surprise cameo in the post credit scene and it’s hilarious. As I said earlier, whenever the focus is on the lead character being a miser, the movie becomes fun to watch.

Toaster Verdict

Overall, Toaster had all the trappings of being a highly watchable black comedy but suffered due to poor writing. A few good jokes and a terrific Rajkummar Rao are the sole saving grace.

Toaster Rating: 2.5/5
