After the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the Indian T20 International (T20I) team in place of Suryakumar Yadav, Iyer has given a very frank and confident statement on his new responsibility. Shreyas Iyer, who took command of the team just before the series against Ireland, has clarified that becoming India’s T20 captain was not a shocking thing for him, rather he was expecting this responsibility for a long time. It is noteworthy that in this new team, young batsman Tilak Verma has been given the responsibility of vice-captain.

“Captaincy is the fruit of hard work, this is the icing on the cake for me”

Shreyas Iyer shared his heartfelt feelings and said, “To be honest, this is not a strange thing for me. I was definitely expecting this at some point. I have performed brilliantly in the previous IPL tournaments and whenever I have got a chance to represent the country. So it was not a surprise for me.”

Iyer further said, “As a child, you always dream of playing for the Indian team, but now when you are captaining the country, it is definitely like icing on the cake. It means a lot to me. It is the result of my hard work and the constant support I have received from fans, family and friends.”

Track record as captain in IPL has been excellent

Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy experience in T20 format has been excellent. Under his captaincy, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the third IPL title in the year 2024. After this, under his leadership in IPL 2025, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) team reached the finals after 10 years. He is the first captain in history to lead two different franchises to the IPL final. Talking about statistics, Iyer has scored 992 runs in the last two IPL seasons at an excellent strike rate of 145.
