The journey of the Indian team in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 came to an end in the group stage itself. The team captained by Harmanpreet Kaur was eliminated from the tournament after losing to Australia in the last group match on Sunday (28). For Team India to reach the semi-finals, it was necessary to win this match at any cost. That means in a way it was a virtual quarterfinal match for him. In this match, the Indian team won the toss and decided to bat first and recovered from the slow start and scored 170 runs at the loss of 4 wickets. Harmanpreet played a blazing inning of 56 runs in 27 balls with the help of 6 fours and 3 sixes, taking the team to a strong score. However this proved insufficient.
With the help of explosive innings by Ellyse Perry and Ashley Gardner, Australia easily achieved the target by losing 4 wickets in 19 overs and gave India a way out. Despite failing to make it to the semi-finals, the Indian team has got a ticket for the 2028 Olympics to be held in Los Angeles. Even after reaching the semi-finals, the West Indies team will have to play qualifiers for the Olympics.
Not only India but also Australia, South Africa and Britain (due to England) have qualified for the women’s cricket event to be held in the upcoming Olympics. All these countries earned Olympic tickets with their performance in the T20 World Cup 2026. Except India, the teams of Australia, South Africa and England have been successful in reaching the semi-finals. All of them have got entry in the Olympics because they were the top teams of their respective continents. Admittedly, India performed best among the Asian teams and secured a place in the Olympics. Similarly, Australia from Oceania, South Africa from Africa and Britain from Europe qualified.
From the Women’s T20 World Cup, only the top performing teams of Oceania, Africa, Europe and Asia were going to get a place in the Olympics. Due to this, the West Indies team could not qualify for the Olympics even after reaching the semi-finals. Apart from this, West Indies is a joint cricket team of many countries and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not even recognize it as a separate National Olympic Committee (NOC).
The Windies team has another chance to play in the Olympics. ICC Olympic Qualifier event will be held next year, from which she can get the ticket for LA28. 6-6 teams are going to participate in the Olympic cricket event. One team will be from the host country America. However, the US women’s team will have to finish in the top-15 in the ICC T20 rankings at least once between June 30, 2026, and December 31, 2026. The US women’s team is currently ranked 20th.
6 teams will also participate in the men’s cricket event in the Olympics, out of which 4 teams will qualify directly on the basis of ICC T20 ranking. Like the women’s, these teams will also be from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. They will have to remain the top team of their respective continents in the ICC T20 rankings on the cut-off date of 31 December 2026. America will get a chance as host. The sixth team will be decided by the qualifier. 8 teams will enter the qualifier event. They will also be given a chance to play qualifiers on the basis of ICC ranking.
