New Delhi: Jason Sanjay, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay, has revealed that he declined an acting opportunity years ago because he wanted to understand filmmaking before stepping into the industry.
According to Jason, filmmaker Alphonse Puthren had approached him with a coming-of-age film when he was around 20 years old. At the time, however, he was still a student and had not decided to pursue cinema professionally. Rather than hearing the script and refusing it later, he chose not to take the meeting out of respect for the filmmaker.
Jason said he was always more interested in storytelling than appearing in front of the camera. Watching films helped him understand screenplay structure, scene construction and narration, gradually shaping his ambition to become a director.
To build his skills, he studied filmmaking in Canada, where he wrote a full-length screenplay before converting it into a short film. The project, he said, helped him evaluate his strengths and weaknesses as a filmmaker before entering the industry.
After returning to India, Jason refined his scripts, sought feedback from friends and industry professionals, and eventually joined hands with Lyca Productions for his directorial debut, Sigma. The film stars Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah in lead roles.
Before beginning the project, Jason discussed his plans with his family and close friends. Their encouragement, along with support from several actors in the industry, gave him confidence to move ahead with the film.
Although Jason appeared in the promotional video Sigma Style, he clarified that it should not be viewed as an acting debut. He said his current priority is ensuring the successful release of Sigma. While he has not ruled out acting in the future, he plans to make that decision only after completing his responsibilities as a director.
