Increasing threat of microplastics

India has already banned single-use plastics and tightened waste management rules. Yet, plastic has become so deeply embedded in our lifestyle that these rules are not being effective. We know this as 'microplastic', which is being found in rivers, lakes, drinking water and also in the air. A recent study has confirmed that its particles are also present in our everyday items, such as salt and sugar.

research findings

The research examined 10 brands of salt and 5 brands of sugar, and microplastics were found in every sample. In particular, iodized packaged salt had the highest concentrations. Its presence in salt and sugar is a matter of concern for our health.

Why are the existing rules weak?

Plastic bottles are easy to control, but preventing plastic particles from washing clothes or driving is challenging. Different institutions have different methods of investigation. We have to understand that unless a standard is made for microplastics across the country, it is not possible to make concrete rules.

steps towards change

The good thing is that new steps are being taken at some levels in the country. Institutes like FSSAI and CSIR are finding the right methods to test microplastics in foods. Courts have also expressed concern over this issue and have suggested that responsible organizations impose warning labels.

future direction

We have to understand that one should not depend on court orders or labels for any work. The country needs a strong framework that establishes a national standard for measurement of microplastics. Along with this, all government departments will have to work together.
