Trichy : Trichy city police have arrested a 32-year-old history-sheeter for waylaying two men on Trichy-Chennai NH with a weapon and stealing their two-wheelers. The bikes, snatched by the accused on consecutive days from the same spot on the highway, have been retrieved.
R Rajesh Kumar, 30, from Ponmalaipatti was travelling on the NH service road around 2.45am on Friday. While approaching a tea stall at Senthaneerpuram, a transgender intercepted him and demanded money. At that time, one Abdul Kafoor Basheer , a history-sheeter, arrived at the spot. Brandishing his machete , he sought money from Rajesh and stole his two-wheeler.
In a similar modus operandi around 2.30am the next day, one S Gowtham, 20, of Palakkarai was stopped by a transgender on the same service road when Abdul Kafoor arrived and took away the youth’s two-wheeler as well as cash while brandishing his machete.
Based on the two complaints, Gandhi Market police arrested the history-sheeter on Saturday evening. However, the transgender was not booked. Residents travelling in odd hours on Trichy-Chennai and Trichy-Madurai NHs said they often spot a group of transgenders close to the carriageways. They have demanded night patrolling and additional streetlights near G Corner, Mannarpuram, Palpannai and Sanjeevi Nagar on the highway to prevent similar waylaying.
