Chandigarh: Punjab is grappling with the highest unemployment rate and a high proportion of persons not in employment, education or training ( NEET ) in the region, according to labour market snapshot of selected districts compiled by National Statistics Office (NSO).
NEET refers to a specific population group, usually young people aged 15-29, who are not in employment, education or training.
The report presents estimates of the labour force participation rate, worker population ratio and unemployment rate (UR) for persons aged 15 years and above, and NEET estimates for those aged 15-29 years.
Punjab’s UR stood at 5.3%, compared with 4.5% each in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh , while its NEET rate was 27.7%, against 27.2% in Haryana and 20.5% in Himachal.
Punjab’s labour force participation rate (LFPR) — the percentage of the working-age population that is either working or actively looking for a job — stood at 55.2%, while its worker population ratio (WPR) — the percentage of employed people out of total population — was 52.3%. The LFPR among the selected districts ranged from 48.0% to 61.2%, while WPR ranged from 43.9% to 58.1%. Among the selected Punjab districts, Patiala recorded the highest LFPR at 61.2% and the highest WPR at 58.1%. Gurdaspur recorded the highest UR at 8.6%, while Sangrur had the lowest at 3%. Gurdaspur also recorded the highest NEET rate among the selected districts at 36.4%, while Bathinda had the lowest at 20.7%.
Haryana, with an overall UR of 4.5% and NEET rate of 27.2%, recorded an LFPR of 50.4% and WPR of 48.1%. Among the selected districts, Sirsa had the highest LFPR at 61.9% and WPR at 60.8%. Yamunanagar recorded the highest UR at 7.4%, while Sirsa had the lowest at 1.8%. Sirsa also recorded the highest NEET rate among the selected districts at 36.3%, while Karnal recorded the lowest at 20.4%.
Himachal recorded the lowest NEET rate among the three states at 20.5%, while its UR stood at 4.5%. The state recorded a substantially higher LFPR of 73.2% and WPR of 69.9%. Among the selected districts, Hamirpur recorded the highest LFPR at 83.5% and WPR at 82.5%. Sirmaur recorded the highest UR at 9.2%, while Mandi had the lowest at 0.8%. Solan recorded the highest NEET rate among the selected districts at 39%, while Lahul & Spiti, Bilaspur and Kinnaur recorded the lowest at 4.8%.
