Former IPL winners Chennai Super Kings are set to name the 37-year-old Mohit Sharma as their next bowling coach ahead of the 2027 season. Just a week ago, the franchise appointed Zaheer Khan as their head coach.

According to TOI, the discussion has entered the final stages between Mohit and his former side, with the official announcement likely to be made soon. This also means the end of the road for Eric Simons, the current bowling coach.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, in his conversation with TOI, said, “Mohit will join Chennai as the new bowling coach, and Zaheer Khan, our head coach, recommended his name. Sharma was tremendous during his time as a player with us, and we hope he will continue to do a good job even as the bowling coach. The next set of coaching staff will be recruited in the coming few weeks on the basis of Zaheer’s recommendations.”

The former pace bowler also enjoys a great rapport with former MS Dhoniconsidering their association in the IPL and also for the national side.

Mohit Sharma’s career in a glance

Having made his domestic debut in 2011, the seamer played his first IPL game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013. He bowled two overs and gave away 13 runs without taking a wicket. Sharma picked up 20 wickets in his debut season and followed it up with 23 wickets in the 2014 campaign and 14 more wickets to help CSK reach the final in 2015.

After Chennai were suspended for two years, the seamer went to Punjab Kingswhere he spent three seasons and took 33 wickets. The former Haryana seamer came back to Chepauk in 2019 but played just one game, where he claimed a single wicket.

After being in the wilderness for three years, the pacer took 27 wickets for Gujarat Titans under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy in IPL 2023. In 2024, the seamer claimed 13 wickets before moving to Delhi Capitals in what was his final IPL year in 2025. He played eight games and finished with just two wickets before calling time on his career.

Mohit also played 26 ODIs and 8 T20Is for India and was a key member of the side that reached the 2015 ODI World Cup semi-finals. He ended his international career with 37 wickets.
