Patrick Mahomes ' return to the football field was never going to be just another offseason recovery. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was forced into one of the toughest stretches of his career after suffering a serious left knee injury late in the 2025 season, and as Mahomes now looks back on his road back, he is making sure to recognize the person who helped keep everything together at home.
His wife, Brittany Mahomes, was there through it all.
Patrick Mahomes reveals Brittany’s unseen sacrifice during his road back to football Mahomes' 2025 season came crashing down in December during the Chiefs' game against the Los Angeles Chargers. He had torn the ACL in his left knee and also suffered an LCL tear, turning what was already a devastating injury into a lengthy rehabilitation process.
The injury ended Mahomes' season and forced him to turn his attention toward a comeback that would take months of painstaking work. And it wasn't only Mahomes' life that changed.
After undergoing surgery, Mahomes began the long process of rebuilding his knee and preparing for a potential return in 2026.
The quarterback's dedication quickly became clear. Chiefs coach Andy Reid later revealed that Mahomes was spending
seven hours a day rehabbing, arriving early and putting in an enormous amount of work to get himself ready.
For Mahomes, those hours were necessary. But they also meant hours away from home. And that's where Brittany stepped in.
Mahomes recently opened up about what that period was like during the Chiefs Kingdom Show, and his comments offered a glimpse into a side of the comeback that fans don't normally get to see.
While Patrick was spending much of his day at the rehab facility, Brittany was taking on even more responsibility at home as a mother of three.
Mahomes acknowledged that his wife had to essentially take on more of the role of running the household because he simply wasn't around as much.
“She had to kind of take on that role even more because I wasn't at the house and I was spending seven hours a day over there in the offseason when we're supposed to be on vacation or back home in Texas.” It was a particularly demanding time for the Mahomes family. Patrick was trying to get his body back to where it needed to be, while Brittany was helping keep life at home moving forward. And Patrick clearly hasn't forgotten that.
Patrick Mahomes gives Brittany credit for being the leader at home Perhaps the most touching part of Mahomes' comments was that he didn't describe the comeback as something he accomplished by himself. Instead, he acknowledged Brittany's role in helping the family navigate the difficult period.
Mahomes explained that Brittany became more of a
leader of the household while he was spending so much time in rehab. That meant taking on additional responsibilities with their three children and making sure their family continued to function while Patrick devoted himself to recovery.
For a player whose comeback has largely been measured in workouts, rehab milestones and eventually football, Mahomes' comments highlighted another kind of work happening away from the field. Brittany's contribution wasn't something that showed up on a stat sheet. But Patrick noticed it.
Mahomes summed up the experience with a line that perhaps says more about his comeback than any rehabilitation update could.
“It’s a full commitment from the full family.”
And that's what makes his comments about Brittany particularly meaningful. The seven-hour rehab sessions belonged to Patrick, but the consequences of those sessions extended into his home life.
While he was rebuilding his knee, Brittany was helping carry more of the load at home. Their three children were part of that new routine, too. It was a family adjustment that happened quietly, away from the cameras and football field.
