Chandigarh: The National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Panchkula , has received approval for 70 postgraduate (PG) seats across 14 Ayurveda disciplines , paving the way for specialised medical education and research at the institute from the 2026-27 academic session .




The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has issued a Letter of Permission (LoP) for the courses, with five seats allocated to each discipline. NIA Panchkula operates as an off-campus centre of the deemed-to-be university National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur.




The approved courses cover Ayurveda Samhita, Siddhanta and Sanskrit; Rachana Sharir; Kriya Sharir; Dravyaguna Vigyan; Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana; Roga Nidana and Vikriti Vigyan; Agad Tantra and Vidhi Vaidyaka; Swasthavritta and Yoga; Kaumarbhritya (Bal Roga); Kayachikitsa; Panchakarma; Prasuti Tantra and Stri Roga; Shalya Tantra; and Shalakya Tantra.




Of the five seats in Shalakya Tantra, three are earmarked for the treatment of ear, nose and oral diseases, while two are designated for ophthalmology. The institute currently offers 100 seats in its Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) programme. Its first batch enrolled in 2024-25, followed by the second batch in 2025-26. Counselling for the third batch is underway, with two rounds already completed.




NIA vice-chancellor Prof (Dr) Sanjeev Sharma said the approval would strengthen higher Ayurveda education and facilitate the training of specialist doctors across disciplines. He said the institute aimed to provide quality academic training and practical exposure while encouraging students and faculty members to pursue scientific research and innovation.




Dean Prof Gulab Chand Pamnani said the new courses would give fresh impetus to specialised Ayurveda education, healthcare and research. Dean-in-charge Prof Satish Gandharva said the expansion would help establish NIA Panchkula as a centre for Ayurveda education and research in north India, while opening new opportunities for aspiring postgraduate students.
