Despite a good income, a sudden job loss or a big expense can cause financial difficulties. Even in America, a significant number of people are unprepared for such a situation. According to a Pew Research Center survey, 53 percent of American adults do not have enough savings to cover three months of expenses without income. This shows that financial security is a big challenge for many.
The daily financial problems of the people were also revealed through this survey. Nearly 27 percent of American adults say they cannot pay some of their bills in full or partially in a typical month. Additionally, 44 percent had difficulty meeting at least one essential expense in the past year. This includes medical treatment, transportation expenses, house rent or mortgage and food. Meeting these needs is especially difficult for those with low incomes.
The survey revealed significant differences in economic status according to income. Seventy-seven percent of low-income individuals do not have enough emergency savings to cover three months of expenses. Similarly, 52 percent of middle-income earners do not have such funds. Comparatively, high income earners are better off. Almost 20 percent of the individuals in this group said they did not have enough savings to cover three months of expenses. These statistics clearly show that unexpected expenses can be more difficult to manage for low-income households.
According to the survey, 54 percent of Americans failed to save for the future last year. Meanwhile, 70 percent cut spending on dining out, entertainment and other nonessential items. These statistics show that even in countries with good economic conditions, many households are struggling to balance their needs and savings.
An emergency fund is a savings that can be used in case of job loss, illness, or sudden large expenses. Experts generally recommend setting aside at least three to six months worth of essential expenses. This can reduce the risk of borrowing during tough times or compromising day-to-day needs.
