Automobile Desk: Whenever electric vehicles are discussed in the world's automobile market, along with the American giant Tesla, another name that appears at the forefront is the Chinese vehicle manufacturing company BYD. Today, even though this brand is delivering thousands and lakhs of state-of-the-art electric cars every month, very few people know that the journey of this global auto giant started not with vehicles but with the manufacturing of mobile phone batteries.
In the last three decades, the company has achieved great heights on the basis of its vision and technology, from battery manufacturing to giving a tough challenge to the established auto makers of the world.
If recent updates are to be believed, the company is also going to strengthen its footing in the Indian luxury automobile market. It is reported that BYD is going to officially launch its super-premium sub-brand Denza in India on November 13. Under this brand, the company's flagship cars like Z9 GT Shooting Brake and D9 luxury MPV will hit the Indian roads. The company plans to directly compete with established luxury car manufacturers by placing these premium vehicles in the segment above Rs 80 lakh.
The foundation of this company was laid in February 1995 in Shenzhen city, which is called the tech hub of China. Its founder Wang Chuanfu, who was a chemist by profession, had sensed the immense potential in the business of rechargeable batteries at that time. As the trend of personal electronics and mobile phones increased rapidly in the 90s, the demand for light and durable batteries in them also started skyrocketing.
Chuanfu took advantage of this opportunity and started supplying batteries for electronic devices. Due to superior quality and continuous innovation, this company very soon established its strong hold in the international supply chain.
This success in electronics encouraged the company to move towards the automotive sector. In the year 2003, the company took a major decision and purchased majority stake in Chinese car manufacturer Xian Qinchuan Automobile, which was struggling financially. With this acquisition the company's automobile journey began and in 2005 they launched their first petrol sedan BYD F3 in the market.
However, the company had its eyes set on the green technology of the future, so it rapidly started research on hybrid and electric powertrains. The result of this hard work was that in 2008, the company attracted the attention of the whole world by introducing the plug-in hybrid model F3DM.
The biggest strength of this Chinese company was that it never depended on any other vendor for the most important component of vehicles i.e. battery. The company developed its own patented blade battery technology, which is based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. Due to its unique design and strict safety tests, this battery is considered safe and durable. Assembling the cars as well as in-house production of critical components such as electric motors and power electronics gives the company excellent control over its manufacturing costs and quality.
Today, the reach of this brand is not limited to just China or Asia. Apart from electric cars and hybrid vehicles, the brand also manufactures commercial electric buses, large battery storage systems and renewable energy products on a large scale. According to available data, by April 2026, the company's new energy vehicles will have established their presence in more than 120 countries.
Talking about sales figures, by the end of May 2026, the company had created a record of sales of more than 1.65 crore new energy vehicles. Earlier, in the year 2024, it had become the first automobile company in the world to produce 1 crore new energy vehicles. Even in the Indian market, the company has already made a good hold in the electric segment through its popular models like Ato 3, E-Max 7, Seal and Sealion 7.
