Some people become part of life long before they realise how much they matter. A teacher's reassuring words, a little encouragement before an important exam or a conversation during a difficult phase can stay with a student for decades. For Shantanu Deshpande , Founder of Bombay Shaving Company, a recent reunion with his former maths teacher brought back exactly those feelings.
Sharing the experience on LinkedIn, Shantanu recalled meeting his teacher, JJ Sir, 21 years after their first memorable interaction. What made the meeting special was not just seeing an old teacher again. It was hearing the same familiar voice that had once helped him through an emotionally difficult moment.
A phone call after the IIT results that stayed with himShantanu went back to 2005, when he received his IIT results. His first call after the result was to his mathematics teacher in Kota, whom he fondly calls JJ Sir.
He described himself as inconsolable during that moment. However, his teacher's voice and reassuring words helped calm him down.
Twenty-one years later, when Shantanu walked into his teacher's office, he heard the familiar greeting, "Arey Shantanu aao."
That simple sentence brought back memories of 2005. His former teacher, who was then a young mathematics teacher at Bansal Classes , had become a senior head of department at and institute. Yet, his voice had remained unchanged.
The words that made him feel 18 againShantanu also shared the advice his teacher gave him:
"Aapko aaj ye cheez badi lag rahi hogi. Lekin jeevan mei do your best and forget the rest. Sab accha hoga."
The message was simple: do your best, let go of what cannot be controlled and trust the process.
Shantanu said the meeting made him feel 18 all over again.
Why a teacher's encouragement can stay for yearsA teacher's influence is not always measured through marks, ranks or academic achievements. Sometimes, it is the confidence they give a student when everything feels uncertain.
The right words can help a young person look beyond one examination, one setback or one disappointing result. And years later, those words can still hold their meaning.
LinkedIn users share their own teacher memoriesShantanu's post also prompted others to revisit their relationships with teachers.
A user recalled meeting a schoolteacher who had once told him he would do great in life. He said that teacher had believed in him when nobody else did.
Another user, remembered a late-night conversation with a teacher during his lowest phase of JEE preparation.
A user also shared a thoughtful observation, saying that standing beside people who helped build the foundation of success can make even the biggest achievements feel small.
The reactions showed that Shantanu's experience was not an isolated one. Many people carry similar memories of teachers who offered support when they needed it most.
Perhaps the most touching part of such reunions is that time changes almost everything, but the feeling of being understood by someone who once believed in you can remain unchanged.
